All my ducks in a row

Almost finished setting and aligning the guards last night.  Here you can see how my "string" method works for lining up each guard.  So far it's worked much better than just sighting down bar...

The shorter guards are combine guards that seem to fit OK.  They have the benefit of sometimes being in stock at my local Tractor Supply Co. (TSC ironically has an ever worsening selection of actual tractor parts).  They're not the same malleable metal as the originals, so rather then pound them into line, I've been shimming them using various thickness washers.    One of the benefits of working on John Deere equipment is that, no matter how old, you can generally get the parts you need... for a price.  I have an order to pick up to hopefully finish off this project, including a new pitman stick.  Yes, it's actually a piece of wood!  Wood actually makes a good shearing device in this case; if the bar is jammed, it will definitely break before the metal parts.
